Things to See and Do in Phuket, Thailand

Phuket is the largest island in Thailand with more than 800.000 inhabitants. It located nearly 800 kilometers from the capital – Bangkok. Phuket was once an important trading center on the road between India and China. Nowadays it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world and it equally visited by young tourists looking for parties and families with children because it has a lot of different things to offer.

There are many things to see and do when you are on Phuket but we are presenting you a short list that will certainly leave you satisfied.

Kata Beach – There are actually two separated beaches here but they both have amazing white sand. This place is very interesting, there are plenty of things to do and it is more suitable for couples and people with children because it doesn’t have a wild nightlife like Patong for example. There are few bars in Kata that play good music and it looks like Bob Marley is always popular on Thailand and in these bars. If you are looking for romantic sunsets Kata beach is the place you are looking for.

There is also a great theme park called Dino park for the kids.

Patong – When you are in Patong you will see Burmese street vendors, Nepali tailors, Thai travel agents and they will all try to communicate with you and show you what they have to offer. Be careful if you are not in a mood you should ignore them completely because they are very talkative. Unlike Kata Beach, patong is the right place for everyone that is looking for wild parties without any limits. There are parties here that last 24 hours a day.

Naiharn – This place has a beautiful small beach which can be reached by road along a small lake that makes this place look a little bit European. Naiharn is a little bit isolated so you will have to rent a car or a bike to get here, but it is worth it.

Rawai – The further you go south on Phuket the more you see traditional things that are completely different from the neon bars you can find on the north. Rawai is a charming fishing village that attracts tourists because of the fresh fish that is prepared in front of you. You can also hire a boat and visit one of the few amazing smaller islands that are near Rawai.

We hope that this is enough for you to make a decision to travel to Phuket!

Phuket: Cabaret Personfied

Captivating ladyboy performers attract throngs of people every night at the hugely popular Phuket Simon Cabaret. Not as well known but well worth seeing is the new ‘Aphrodite’ in Phuket Town, which runs three cabaret shows every evening. Many more of the same can be seen at some of the Soi Paradise bars and at the Moulin Rose  at the end of the famous Soi Katoey. (Katoey literally translated means Ladyboy). See also where to party if you are into Ladyboy shows and more at the Paradise Complex.

Phuket’s long been a popular destination for those seeking sun, sand, sea and… companionship but not all men coming here seek female company. Many male visitors look for male companionship, sometimes for the duration of their holidays, sometimes for much longer.

At the Royal Paradise Complex in Patong an estimated half of the businesses there are run by, or are catering to gay people. Many are small bars with a selection of young men who sit, talk and share drinks with their guests. There is no obligation to spend more than the price of a drink.

The atmosphere in the Complex during the day is sleepy as most of the 1,000 young men working in the almost 40 entertainment venues are fast asleep but at night the atmosphere is, to say the least, friendly with the occasional invitation to join a cabaret show, a massage or some private company.

Palazzo, located close to Phuket Water Ski in Kathu, revives the old-fashioned concept of dining while watching a show. Vividly coloured and bold in design, concept and execution, Palazzo attempts the impossible; to combine goofy light entertainment with serious dining.

The idea of a dinner show is hardly a new one but Palazzo puts a turn of the last century spin on it with a ‘mirror palace’ or ‘spiegeltent’ – a wood and stained glass pyramid-shaped show building, originally from Belgium that dates back over 100 years.

The entertainment is great for family and group outings and the international cast from countries such as China, Russia and Thailand is truly talented. The multi-act show includes juggling, African acrobatics, contortionists and live music as well as a spot of eastern magic and illusion thrown in for spice. At around three hours long, the show isn’t necessarily the best for smaller children and toddlers but it is still hugely entertaining with lots of audience participation.

The best of Nightlife in Phuket 2014

Phuket’s nightlife is as varied as its topography. From wild A-Go-Gos to quiet little beer bars to all-out club action to sipping a Mai Thai at a beach bar, it’s all there for those who want it. Of course, Patong is undeniably Party Central with Bangla Road the beating heart of the Beast but Kata and Karon have similar, if not more modest, nightlife scenes while even Phuket Town boasts a few hopping clubs that cater mainly to locals.

Surin Beach features the classy StereoLab while nearby Cherng Talay has a cluster of bars in Tinlay Place near to the Laguna entrance but other than that this area is quiet. Lastly, Rawai, in the south of the island, is fast becoming a party town.

Bangtao is not the best choice if your main goal is to party in Phuket. Having said that, since 2008 Bangtao Beach has seen the opening of trendy new venues such asBliss beach club and Xana Club which offer food, drinks and entertainment – including international DJs till late.

Tinlay Place, at the Phuket Laguna entrance, has a cluster of bars and restaurants that have a faithful long-term expatriate following. From early evening on you’ll find people heading towards Peppers Sports Bar or Tatonka to catch up on the latest news. The Supper Club with its extensive menu also has a good wine list and good music.

Besides these places, nightlife in Bangtao can also be a chill-out event with a drink at one of the reggae joints at the northern part of the beach.

Once the haunt of yachties dropping anchor for a season or two, Chalong used to have just a couple of bars where sailors met for a drink or three. Most of the old bars are still there, but Chalong has undergone a facelift in recent times.

The smart pier, long enough at 800 metres to warrant a shuttle bus service, has also encouraged a cluster of new restaurants and cafes to open along the entrance road. In high season, most bars stay open until 02:00 but shut down as early as 10:00 in the low season (June-October).

Although Kamala has recently grown rapidly, you can still enjoy the seaside village atmosphere that first attracted visitors all those years ago. The beachside bars are a good spot for a sundowner and to catch a glimpse of local fisherman coming in for the night.

When the sun goes down, most visitors enjoy strolling through the village to one of the small local restaurants – basic but tasty. During the high season months, local vendors set up stalls along the beach, so you can pick up some beachwear bargains and souvenirs at leisure.
